Research

I’m continuing my work and research in the Coyle lab. Lots to do, lots of cool papers to read, and lots of neat things to try. Still working on the yeast subgroup of the MinDE project!

Python

scikit-learn is a wonderful package, especially once you get the hang of running a confusion matrix and measuring accuracy. I’m learning a lot about how to use binary classification and train_test_split. Machine learning is a neat tool to use if you do have enough biological data to feed it. Ah, the sweet sounds of medium-throughput.

Gaming

One of my friends started up a Spelljammer campaign, so I’m back to playing D&D 5e. It’s been a couple years since I played Dungeons & Dragons exactly, so it took be a little bit to remember how all the rules work. Combat feels very clunky coming from the fast-paced initiative system I was using in the House Rules system, but some of the tactics have been very rewarding. I’d like to see more ways to speed through the combat in D&D, though. I don’t like that so much of the game system revolves around fighting.

My college crew and I have not yet finished our game from the spring semester, so we’re taking a break for the summer. I’m hoping to finish up in a session or two as soon as we all move back for the fall. That gives me some more time to plan the finale—we’ve been building up to this all semester.

Reading

Now that the semester’s over, I have more time to spend on books. I finished up American Prometheus, and now I’m reading Hyperion by Dan Simmons. It’s a strange sci-fi novel, and not the sort that I usually read. Feels much more like re-reading Ringworld or some other older books from that period.
